The Members: At the Chelsea Nightclub [Virgin International, 1979]
The inheritors of English punk haven't turned to power pop; they're putting their energies into reggae. Britain's own indigenous black music, with the r&b syntheses of the Stones rather than the blues imitations of the Savoy Browns serving as precedent. The crude feel and committed socioeconomic awareness of this album recall 1977, but the rhythms and tempos leave room for their rebellious-suburban-lad-escaped-to-the-city to give forth with a slyer kind of humor.
