In 2002 I hardly had any
old music on my year-end list, for the first time since I started
buying CDs. In 2003 I started writing a reissues column, and now I
have tons of old music -- spend most of my life these days listening
to old music. So when the new music list came up short, I started to
add a few old items -- things that had never been released before,
or hadn't been released anywhere one might have found it, plus a
few innovative compilations. Then I tacked on a few 2002 releases
that I not only discovered this year, that I hadn't heard of back
in 2002, and that damn few people had. Voila, a list bigger than
ever. It's also, I'm afraid, a weirder list than ever. I've done
up some numbers on how things break down (cf. my website for them),
but even offhand this looks like a strange mix of avant-jazz,
alt-country, and old reggae. And underground rap, which may be
what I like best these days, even though I don't run into much
of it.
