Consumer Guide Reviews:
Billy Joe Thomas [Scepter, 1972]
B.J. might be the Johnny Rivers of the Leon Russell generation--he was born in Texas, after all--if only he had better taste. Some pleasant stuff complements the two great ones here--"Rock and Roll Lullaby," the hit, and the suppressed Carole King nasty, "A Fine Way to Go"--but anyone who'd agree to record "We've Got to Get Our Ship Together" is in need of some brain-caulking himself. The Very Best of B.J. Thomas [United Artists, 1974]
I understand now that Thomas never turned rock and roller because he was, and is, a country singer. And like most he does better with the real stuff--"No Love at All" comes close for a pop song and he broke with a Hank Williams cover--than with Bacharach-David. But I still want to know who left "Rock and Roll Lullabye" off this thing. C
